OVERVIEW SDGS POINT 5 GENDER EQUALITY (Carissa (9) and Salma (32)

Gender equality has become a problem that often occurs in our society and we still rarely find ways to prevent it in our society. UNICEF defined gender equality as "women and men, and girls and boys, enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities and protections. If we don't immediately do something to reduce it, this goals wont be achieved.

The goal of the SDGs number 5 is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. And out of those goal indicators we can see that 15,4% is already on track, 61,5% is at a moderate distance, and then with a 23,1% is far or very far off track.

And with this current rate, we can see that it will need around 300 years to end child marriage, which is 1 in 5 women have been married before the legal age of 18. At the current pace, the world is at least 300 years away from ending child marriage and more than 9 million girls will still be married in the year 2030. Additional challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as we can see it on the graphic from the UN website, conflicts and the impacts of climate change threaten to further hamper progress. Pandemic impacts alone are expected to result in an additional 10 million girls underage becoming child brides by 2030.

And then 286 years to close gaps in legal protection and remove discriminatory law, Nearly half of married woman lack decision-making power over sexual and reproductive rights. Based on the data collected in 2022 from 119 countries reveal ongoing challenges for women in accessing their full human rights due to discriminatory laws and gaps in legal protection. An astonishing 55 per cent of countries lack laws that explicitly prohibit direct and indirect discrimination against women; 60 per cent lack laws that define rape based on the principle of consent. Another 45 per cent do not mandate equal remuneration for work of equal value, while more than a third of countries fail to provide maternity leave in accordance with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards.

Also it’ll need some 140 years to achieve equal representation in leadership in the workplace like we can see on where the Legislated quotas are effective to achieve equality in politics, by 2022 women representations in parliament is 30.9% of countries are ready applying quotas and 21.2% countries  without quota.

Conclusion. Once all these menaces will be eradicated, every family will understand the value of a woman and our country will achieve gender equality in a real sense. Women are creating examples everywhere and we all should highlight them to change the scenario and give them equal rights. And actually, Mobile phone ownership can be a powerful tool for empowering women, but gender parity remains elusive in many regions.
